Paul Hawkins – Self Portrait No. 1

I`m nine stone soaked through,
laid out on this
smothering bed.

The room smells of dead batteries,
the water tastes of white spirit.

I look out at Interstate 55;
a break in the flare of night traffic
gives a pause,
to nightmare reflections
in the Mississippi.
